Engaged by the Fattal Group and Pandox in early 2019, our studio embarked on a comprehensive refurbishment of the prestigious Midland hotel, a Grade II listed Edwardian Baroque landmark in Manchester designed by Charles Trubshaw. Recognising the hotel’s rich history, including its pivotal role in the formation of Rolls-Royce Limited, our design approach aimed to revitalise the interior, which had unfortunately diminished from its original splendour.
The design brief focused on the functionality and ambiance of the grand lobby. Our objective was to introduce increased and versatile seating arrangements, create distinct zones for dining and beverages throughout the day, incorporate a dedicated bar area with space for musical performances, and optimise the reception and check-in experience while providing comfortable waiting and lounge areas.
Our final design concept draws inspiration from the Victorian winter garden or palm house. The introduction of tiered circular levels serves multiple purposes; generating additional seating, establishing a central platform for the new circular bar, and effectively breaking down the substantial ceiling height. The design choice creates an engaging and dynamic atmosphere upon entry, naturally drawing guests into the vibrant space while maintaining clear sightlines and intuitive navigation to reception and lift access.
The incorporation of olive trees and lush planting, a curated selection of conservatory- style furniture, a subtly patterned palm leaf carpet, and a refined palette of greens and teals collectively reinforces the desired winter garden aesthetic, breathing new life into this iconic hotel.
