The Grand Opera House, Belfast

The Grand Opera House, Belfast, is the only Victorian theatre in the Provence dating back to 1895. Designed by Frank Matcham, it presented an exciting opportunity to sensitively reimagine the interiors for a contemporary audience. Our design approach for this prestigious project centred on harmonising essential modernisation with the preservation of its rich historical character.

The design focused on enhancing the visitor experience with improved circulation, accessible spaces, and efficient bars and cloakrooms. Our simple approach focused on two key elements. Firstly, we replaced the existing institutional staircase with a dramatic helical design. This new feature became a central focal point, drawing visitors into the lobby and offering views towards the back bar and the soaring triple-height space. Secondly, we focused on elevating the aesthetic, transforming the existing finishes into a more refined and beautiful environment, ensuring a memorable and enriching experience for all patrons.
