The Grand Opera House, Belfast

The Grand Opera House, Belfast, is Northern Ireland’s premier Victorian theatre, built in 1895 by renowned architect Frank Matcham.

The project aimed to modernise the theatre while preserving its historic character. This included upgrading M&E systems (heating, cooling, sound, lighting), replacing seating, an restoring intricate plasterwork and the painted ceiling.

Crucially, the brief addressed the dated and inadequate public areas. The design focused on enhancing the visitor experience with improved circulation, accessible spaces, and efficient bars and toilets.

Our simple approach focused on two key elements. Firstly, we replaced the existing institutional staircase with a dramatic helical staircase. This new feature became a central focal point, drawing visitors into the lobby and offering views towards the back bar and the soaring triple-height space. Secondly, we focused on elevating the aesthetic, transforming the existing ‘brutal’ finishes into a more refined and beautiful environment.
