Inviting and Timeless

The Grand Opera House, Belfast City Centre

Luxury refurbishment for an iconic venue

The Grand Opera House is the only Victorian theatre in Northern Ireland, and was built by renowned architect Frank Matcham in 1895.

The brief was to deliver a scheme that would address the existing theatre but also include a complete re-design of the unattractive extension and public areas that had been added on. These additional spaces were already beginning to look tired and had never truly satisfied the requirements needed to facilitate the theatre.

One thread that continued through each stage was the need to preserve the original architecture and detail of such a beautiful building. Our aim was to create an elegant and welcoming space, which complimented the grandeur of this historic building located in the city centre.
Enticing, classic and captivating were key aspects that we wanted to encapsulate within the renovation, whilst staying sympathetic to the original scheme by celebrating the opulent reds and golds.

“From the initial Brief that we supplied, the Team at Garuda had a very clear vision of how they would approach each of the many areas and facets of the 2 buildings and the many challenges that they offered. The introduction of the Central stair in the Lobby has transformed the Arrival space along with the finishes and lighting and has created a phenomenal multi functional space which is both grand and welcoming. Each area, bar, public toilet, corridor, auditorium, carpet design and design element has been carefully considered to be both Aesthetically pleasing and be commercially practical. The rich colours and finishes that were promised have elevated the Customer experience and created the Elegant space that the Building deserves and breathed New life into this vitally Important Destination for the Arts in Belfast. Although a lot of the construction took place over lockdown we felt that there was a continuous dialogue and commitment to the Project and appreciated and enjoyed the communication and Design Process.” We are truly delighted with the finished result.”
