Transforming a historic London courthouse interior into a luxury hotel
Keeping the innate character of this fascinating listed building on London’s Old Street, yet create a high-end hotel experience was at the heart of this project.
We undertook a brief to reinvent this original 1903 Edwardian courthouse, complete with cell blocks, to develop a new 5-storey block of bedrooms with new excavated basement, swimming pool and spa, 100-seater cinema and bowling alley.
The signature restaurant is now housed in the main court room, hosting historical references to the building’s original use. The 27 contemporary bedrooms and suites with a roof-top bar looking out over the characterful East End of London delivers a wonderful juxtaposition of both time and essence.
This was a unique and rewarding project, providing an opportunity to weave the original features and characteristics of the courthouse and cell blocks into a quirky, bespoke and purposeful hotel environment.
